The Albany Practice provided woman-centred care as recommended by the Changing Childbirth report (DOH 1993).

Principles of the Albany Model

  • Self-employed and self-managed midwifery group practice
  • Sub-contracted to King’s College Hospital NHS Trust
  • 7 midwives in partnership, with 2 practice support workers
  • Non-clinical community base
  • Providing antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care to women with two named midwives
  • Midwives have individual caseloads
  • The Practice provides care to 216 women per year
  • Women referred by local GPs
  • Based in an inner-city part of South-East London with recognised high levels of deprivation
  • Provides antenatal and postnatal groups free to local women
