The Albany Practice provided woman-centred care as recommended by the Changing Childbirth report (DOH 1993).
Principles of the Albany Model
- Self-employed and self-managed midwifery group practice
- Sub-contracted to King’s College Hospital NHS Trust
- 7 midwives in partnership, with 2 practice support workers
- Non-clinical community base
- Providing antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care to women with two named midwives
- Midwives have individual caseloads
- The Practice provides care to 216 women per year
- Women referred by local GPs
- Based in an inner-city part of South-East London with recognised high levels of deprivation
- Provides antenatal and postnatal groups free to local women
